Reflections from an RV 051912

Brrr! It’s a little chilly here in St. Marys, GA this morning. We had a heavy rainstorm last night and it’s still overcast and damp this morning. Undaunted, I grabbed a sweatshirt, my helmet and headed out for a delightful one hour bike ride! The base has some great bike/walking paths, with lots to see. We’re on a submarine base, so there’s some interesting ‘architecture’ in addition to the woods and wildlife.  Who says that exercise can’t be fun? I like to do a little meditation while I ride, breathing in God and exhaling out any stress, bad thoughts or whatever might be troubling me. We are nestled in the woods, with lots of little lakes and bridges, and I returned with a light heart and a clear head. I had the idea that I would like to drop a few more pounds and get in great shape this summer, so the exercise is in harmony with that goal. The bike makes it fun and something to look forward to, rather than dreading the “E” word.

When I returned from the bike ride, Dave and the dogs were up. I made a pot of coffee and a nice, healthy breakfast. We actually donned some sweatshirts and turned on the little fireplace/heater in the living area. We’re only a few hundred miles from Titusville but already enjoying some cooler weather.

We didn’t do too much yesterday, mostly just explored the base and set up stuff in the RV. We’ve brought lots of books to read and some yarn to crochet a few things. I also have that murder mystery I started writing about a year ago, but had to set aside because life got too big. Now I’m inspired again and ready to bring that thing to life. When I tell people that I’m an author, they often respond with, “I’ve always wanted to write a book.” I’ve discovered that in order to make that happen, one must actually sit down and write. I am eternally grateful to my coach, Lorraine Edey for encouraging me to turn that dream into a goal with an action plan!

I had fun yesterday on Dr. Melanie’s radio show with my friend and fellow author, Sean Anderson. I really enjoy being a guest on the radio! Sean was great too! He and I have been talking about a joint project – a cookbook that features recipes from people who’ve also survived and recovered from morbid obesity. That’s still in the talking phase but it could come to life by the end of the summer!

Dave and I will drive up to Brunswick later today, check out the city and meet my friend Vivian for dinner. Viv and I were friends when we both lived in Orlando back in the 90’s and have rediscovered one another via a mutual friend. We caught up last year on a weekend excursion in our RV so it will be good to connect once again. I’m getting in touch with friends along our route to visit while we’re nearby. I will be heading to Columbia, SC for a day to see some friends while we are parked in Yemessee, SC for our next leg of the trip.

The view from our RV is nice – the lake is picturesque and at night there’s some wildlife. Dave saw a deer two nights ago; reminds me of home. We’ve rushed around for so much of our lives, working and trying to get ahead, that now it is so wonderful to just slow down, breathe in God and relax. It truly is a spiritual experience!

Who Are Your Heroes?

Remember Sully Sullenberger?

He’s the pilot who miraculously landed a jet on the Hudson River without losing one of his 155 passengers. He was ranked second in TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009. When asked about his biggest accomplishment, Sully didn’t cite the landing; he said, “Our daughters.

In 2010, Sully interviewed another hero – Chief Master Sergeant Tony Travis, who created a makeshift control ‘tower’, where planes could bring sorely needed supplies into the earthquake ravaged Haiti. Water and supplies insured survival for thousands of Haitians. Bet you never heard of Sergeant Tony Travis! He’s an unsung hero.

There are many unknown heroes, but you rarely hear about the boy scout who helps an old lady get across the road these days. I went hero-hunting on the internet and found a bunch of people that I not only I didn’t know, but also wasn’t significantly impacted by their heroics. This lead me to wonder about who my heroes are. I have a few and want to take this opportunity to say, “Thank you.” I’d much rather write about them, than people I don’t know.

I was first introduced to Ann Lamott when a friend sent me a copy of her book, Traveling Mercies.  It was at a time when I felt like my life was spiritual, but I didn’t necessarily worship in community. I developed a curiosity about possibly returning to church but even better, I loved her style of writing. It was more like somebody talking; it was kind of like how I talked and it birthed an ‘ah-ha’ moment for me – I could also write a book! And I did! So, thank you Ann! I’m one of the people who’ve you’ve impacted.

In 2005, burned out by 25 years of managing communities, I prayed for an angel who’d help me figure out what I could do with my life, and was introduced to Coach Lorraine Edey.who walked with me while I turned dreams into goals and finally  become a life coach and motivational speaker! She helped me with the business side of becoming a coach and when I inadvertently shared that I always wanted to write a book, encouraged and supported me until the boxes of Trust God and Buy Broccoli arrived on my doorstep. Lorraine held my intentions to become a spiritual coach; I believe that I wouldn’t be the intuitive coach that I am today without her intercession. Thank you, Coach Lorraine for your impact on my life.

Perhaps there’s some heroes in your life too, that you’ve just never really thought about how they changed your direction or assured you on your present path. Why not take a moment today to thank them?

Who are your people?

I was reading an online newsletter today http://www.stonecircleonline.org and paused to ponder. Who are my people? Who are the people that have influenced me and have been my partners on this path to my present person?

Of course, in my early life, family influenced my early morals and convictions. As I sprouted wings and soared on my own, many others along the way made both positive and negative impacts on my direction.

Right or wrong, all those life experiences are part of who I am today. I do not have regrets for the harder lessons, for they’ve contributed to my compassion for others who experience those same challenges. We come out on the other side, eventually.

In my present life, some stand out as models, folks I’d like to emulate. There’s Gloria, who teaches me integrity and stick-to-it-iveness. How I longed to birth the book inside of me that begged to be born, yet I wrote nothing. Then Coach Lorraine suggested that one who wishes to be published must apply a pen to paper. Can you imagine the pride I feel as my second book nears completion?

And there’s my sweet husband, David. He retired four years ago and employs balance in his life. Chores take up no more than one and a half hours a day. He has two ‘fun’ part-time jobs. He sleeps until nine, unless something prevents that. His philosophy of ‘no matter where you go, there you are’, inspires me to stay in the moment, where I used to hurry to be somewhere else, other than where I was.

And who are YOUR people?
