Creating Memories

Grandparents uid 736109How many retirees are sitting in their easy chairs, flipping channels and wondering where their lives have gone? Will you be someone who looks back and regrets all the things you haven’t accomplished? Not me!

I highly suspect that no senior will be making the comment, “I wish I could have worked more. Forty hours a week just wasn’t enough.” Don’t get me wrong, when I had a fast-paced corporate  career, I put in an honest day’s work for my salary. Some days were longer than others, if deadlines loomed ahead. But when the work day was done, life was mine!

I know that in my golden years, I can look back and feel pride about publishing several books. When I tell others that I’m an author, the most common response is, “I’ve always wanted to write a book.”  This dream cannot happen until one actually picks up the pen, or in today’s environment, sits down at the computer.  Are you one of those people who always wanted to write a book too?

I fly frequently which gives us free airline tickets. Next week, Dave and I are heading to Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta. I’ve always wanted to see this, but until we actually made the reservations, it couldn’t happen! As soon as two more comp tickets come through, we’ll plan a trip to a place we’ve never been. Our country has some fantastic sights – the Grand Canyon, Niagra Falls, San Francisco … what wonderful memories for my golden years.

I don’t have to hop on a plane to create memories – just a morning bike ride can be a visual treat. I’ve often seen deer, raccoons, an occasional bobcat and some gorgeous sunrises on my trek around the neighborhood.

Sometimes after dinner, Dave and I will drive over to Canaveral National Seashore and just walk. It’s a quiet beach and there have been occasions when we were the only visitors, save a sea gull or two. We don’t have to drive very far for a quiet, spiritual experience!

It is not too late to plan your future memories by living out your dreams today. Whether it is tap dance lessons, a new exercise program, a puppy or just a new recipe, grab hold of tomorrow’s fond recollections – today.

Spiritual Tip of the Day – Reframe it!

“Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs.” Dr. Maxwell Maltz

Reframing is a technique commonly used in coaching, where people discover that by changing their perspective, problems become opportunities!

A few years ago, I was invited to speak at a local church, for a kick off program called Lead Like Jesus, based on the book of the same name, by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges. It changed how I looked at my life and my coaching practice, which shifted toward helping people to see the spirituality in life. I found that any goal becomes more exciting and attainable, when viewed in a spiritual light.

Prior to that, I went on a scuba diving trip in the Florida Keys. There was an interesting coral formation very near to where we descended from the boat, but seemingly void of any fish. Instead of scurrying away to find the most colorful fish, I felt drawn to patiently wait and watch. Soon I was aware that something was also watching me! It was the biggest Jewfish I had ever seen, nestled quietly underneath the formation, resembling Elmer Fudd with his pouting lower lip! We both watched each other intently for a period of time – it was indeed a spiritual experience.

By reframing life to stay present in the moment, there is a reward. In the case of scuba diving, I reframed how I approached that dive, looking for what was right in front of me, rather than what may be up ahead. I’ve done the same thing with my weaknesses, embracing and reframing them to be strengths. It is in my imperfections that people are able to relate to me! I saw perfection for what it really is – unattainable! As stated in previous blogs, I seek excellence today, which is possible, where perfection just is not.

In 1993, I reframed dieting, which never really worked very well – each diet ultimately resulted in a weight gain! Sure, initially I’d lose weight, but as soon as the diet was over, I’d return to my old eating habits, gain back what I lost and a few more pounds for good measure. That has to be insanity, to repeat something that was unsuccessful, over and over, hoping that this time it will be different. My thinking shifted to a spiritual approach to eating. I not only lost over 100 lbs, but also, for the first time in my life, did not return to my old eating habits that had doomed me to a life of morbid obesity. In actuality, I had reframed my outlook on eating many years before I even know what reframing was! If you want to read more about this, you can order my book, Trust God and Buy Broccoli, A Spiritual Approach to Weight Loss.

Perhaps there is something you want to change in your life. Maybe it’s time to reframe it! Please let us know how that worked for you!

Who are your people?

I was reading an online newsletter today http://www.stonecircleonline.org and paused to ponder. Who are my people? Who are the people that have influenced me and have been my partners on this path to my present person?

Of course, in my early life, family influenced my early morals and convictions. As I sprouted wings and soared on my own, many others along the way made both positive and negative impacts on my direction.

Right or wrong, all those life experiences are part of who I am today. I do not have regrets for the harder lessons, for they’ve contributed to my compassion for others who experience those same challenges. We come out on the other side, eventually.

In my present life, some stand out as models, folks I’d like to emulate. There’s Gloria, who teaches me integrity and stick-to-it-iveness. How I longed to birth the book inside of me that begged to be born, yet I wrote nothing. Then Coach Lorraine suggested that one who wishes to be published must apply a pen to paper. Can you imagine the pride I feel as my second book nears completion?

And there’s my sweet husband, David. He retired four years ago and employs balance in his life. Chores take up no more than one and a half hours a day. He has two ‘fun’ part-time jobs. He sleeps until nine, unless something prevents that. His philosophy of ‘no matter where you go, there you are’, inspires me to stay in the moment, where I used to hurry to be somewhere else, other than where I was.

And who are YOUR people?
