Things are not always as they seem!

I was cooking yesterday, making a big pot of my delicious black bean chili so that Dave has some stuff to eat while I’m in Nashville this weekend. As a rule, I don’t measure spices, kind of just dump them in. Well, I reached for the chili powder, made a few generous passes over the crock pot and realized it wasn’t chili powder, but nutmeg.

Oh geeze, now what? My first thought was to dump it down the drain – all that ground beef, several cans of black beans, and the rest of it. I was truly agitated with myself, inspiring negative self-talk; “You stupid idiot!” I would never speak to anyone the way I sometimes speak to myself.

I calmed down, and wondered how much damage a little nutmeg could cause. What would it hurt to let it simmer in the crock pot and let Dave taste it later (I’m on the no-BLT’s plan – no bites, licks or tastes)?

So, when he came home from his part time job at Disney, Dave lifted the lid on the crock pot, smelled the chili and asked for a bowl! I accommodated him, not mentioning my screw up with the spices. So there he was, a little after midnight, chowing down, raving about how it was the best chili I had ever made. Chuckling, I shared my nutmeg saga. He suggested that I add it to all future chilis!

So there you go. My famous black bean chili will have an opportunity to be even more famous for it’s new secret ingredient, so don’t tell anyone! It could have used a little more jalapeno pepper. I always err on the side of conservative with the hot stuff!

Had I followed my first negative inkling and pitched the chili, we’d never have known what good could come from a seemingly bad situation. I learned something yesterday – things aren’t always what they seem and what may look like a negative in the moment, could be a positive just waiting to happen!

Spiritual tip of the day ~ Find the good in every challenge!

Mothers and Daughters uid 745832My Pollyanna was in high gear yesterday. It is sometimes challenging, but I try to find something good in everything. And it can often be a spiritual experience!

I had several appointments in Orlando. I have a really cute pair of white Capri’s but don’t I wear very often, because they are a perfect fit – so perfect that sometimes they are too tight!

Well, I had a notion to wear them yesterday and they stretched out! Now they’re comfortably loose. I came downstairs in them and my husband said, “Wow!” Nothing like a compliment from my hubby to make me feel like a million bucks.

I had several errands in Orlando, the first a lunch appointment. I had a mishap with the white pants on the way … my car was burglarized some weeks back and the police dusted it for fingerprints. That black powder gets into everything. I thought I had it all out … wrong! There I was, walking into the restaurant looking like I forgot to do the laundry. Drat!

So after lunch, I called Dave and explained my dilemma. He suggested that I go buy a new pair of pants, so I headed to a favorite store, where I know they regularly have 70% off racks. I not only found a beautiful pair of slacks (in safe black!), but also five really fantastic tops and spent … are you ready?

$67.29 … Now THAT is a spiritual experience for sure!

I am the QUEEN of bargains!  Lots of  good came out of that little challenge. Later, at home, it took some hand spotting and two runs through the washer, but I got the black spots out of the white pants too! I’m grateful, because I really like those britches!

In my morning rushing to get out of the house, I forgot my packed dinner in the fridge. I weigh and measure most of my meals. For those of you who are new to my blog, I’ve lost over one hundred pounds and have maintained it for nearly seventeen years. (http://www.trustGodandbuybroccoli.com)

Not to worry, I had time to slip into Whole Foods and order what I needed from the deli, and enjoyed some things I don’t normally fix for myself. But geeze, $17 to get what I needed. That was almost double my lunch in a Chinese restaurant! It sure tasted good though.

The next two appointments were fantastic. I met up with another author whom I haven’t seen in at least a dozen years. She looks fantastic and her life is a total success story. We both were struggling back in the nineties and now we both are success stories. It was a great reunion. A bonus; her mother was a good friend but I lost contact with her. I’ll also be reuniting with her soon.

Next, off to the book store where I met my new web designer who’s going to give my website a facelift. She and I agreed to some ideas and now I’m really excited. Over the weekend, my task will be to prepare the content for the new pages and we are off and running. So stay tuned for the grand unveiling in the near future!

It was a great day, even with the spots on my pants and the expensive dinner. We can always find either the worst or the best in everything. Call it Pollyanna, but the positive spin can turn even the worst nightmares  into a spiritual phenomena!

Spiritual Tip of the Day – Exercise

Life an uid 1187004What could possibly be spiritual about exercise? Well, it’s all part of taking good care of me. I hated exercise. Even though I had lost over 100 lbs in 1993, exercise wasn’t part of that regiment – I lost it by eating less. A medical problem about eight years ago resulted in a weight gain, so in addition to changing my eating, I also was encouraged to move my body. I did so, kicking and screaming.

I remember one evening, walking and whining on the phone to a dear friend. She asked me if my negative attitude may exacerbate the dislike of exercise. Her question initiated some thought. Could I change how I looked at exercise to make it more palatable? What did I have to lose?

Someone then told me about walking meditation. Wow, meditate while walking? What a concept. I have trouble sitting still, so the idea of walking and meditating appealed to me. There are many suggestions on how to do this and I found one that worked for me!

To clear my mind, I breathe in while thinking, “Breathe in God”. When exhaling, I say, “Breathe out self.” A rhythm starts and soon my head clears. I am blessed to live in a wooded area, so there are lots to see while walking. I try to look ‘into ‘the wooded area, between the trees to what lies beyond. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to see a deer! My mind becomes calm and quiet. If random thoughts begin to clutter my mind, I once again repeat my little mantra and adjust my steps to the cadence of the words, saying them slowly and deliberately.

Breathe in God.

Breathe out self.

Spiritual Tip of the Day – Reframe it!

“Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you can change your beliefs.” Dr. Maxwell Maltz

Reframing is a technique commonly used in coaching, where people discover that by changing their perspective, problems become opportunities!

A few years ago, I was invited to speak at a local church, for a kick off program called Lead Like Jesus, based on the book of the same name, by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges. It changed how I looked at my life and my coaching practice, which shifted toward helping people to see the spirituality in life. I found that any goal becomes more exciting and attainable, when viewed in a spiritual light.

Prior to that, I went on a scuba diving trip in the Florida Keys. There was an interesting coral formation very near to where we descended from the boat, but seemingly void of any fish. Instead of scurrying away to find the most colorful fish, I felt drawn to patiently wait and watch. Soon I was aware that something was also watching me! It was the biggest Jewfish I had ever seen, nestled quietly underneath the formation, resembling Elmer Fudd with his pouting lower lip! We both watched each other intently for a period of time – it was indeed a spiritual experience.

By reframing life to stay present in the moment, there is a reward. In the case of scuba diving, I reframed how I approached that dive, looking for what was right in front of me, rather than what may be up ahead. I’ve done the same thing with my weaknesses, embracing and reframing them to be strengths. It is in my imperfections that people are able to relate to me! I saw perfection for what it really is – unattainable! As stated in previous blogs, I seek excellence today, which is possible, where perfection just is not.

In 1993, I reframed dieting, which never really worked very well – each diet ultimately resulted in a weight gain! Sure, initially I’d lose weight, but as soon as the diet was over, I’d return to my old eating habits, gain back what I lost and a few more pounds for good measure. That has to be insanity, to repeat something that was unsuccessful, over and over, hoping that this time it will be different. My thinking shifted to a spiritual approach to eating. I not only lost over 100 lbs, but also, for the first time in my life, did not return to my old eating habits that had doomed me to a life of morbid obesity. In actuality, I had reframed my outlook on eating many years before I even know what reframing was! If you want to read more about this, you can order my book, Trust God and Buy Broccoli, A Spiritual Approach to Weight Loss.

Perhaps there is something you want to change in your life. Maybe it’s time to reframe it! Please let us know how that worked for you!
